From today, Dr Marlene Louw will begin taking the reins as the South African Pork Producers’ Organisation’s (SAPPO) new chief executive officer.
Dr Louw will replace Dr Peter Evans, who has been serving in the role since 2023.
No changes for 100 days
Dr Louw says she does not foresee any changes being made to the SAPPO structures for the next 100 days. “For now, I’m just really looking forward to working with the team, learning the ropes, and preparing to fully take over from Dr Evans.”
Dr Evans, a veterinarian, will still play a critical role in the organisation and in giving direction with regard to animal health and welfare issues. He has played a key role in establishing the pork industry as one of the leading livestock industries in the country regarding One Health issues where human, animal, and plant life intertwines.
Supercharged sustainability
Dr Louw was previously employed as a senior economist at ABSA Agribusiness where she solidified her reputation as an expert in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles, and sustainable finance in agriculture.
“At the moment I am thrilled to step into the role of SAPPO CEO and join this incredible organisation at such an important time for the sector. With global food systems under pressure and the agricultural sector facing increased challenges and new opportunities, I believe there is a unique opportunity to lead with purpose.
“I am particularly energised by the work being done on ESG and sustainability, where the adoption of innovative solutions that drive productivity and resilience presents inherent value to multiple stakeholders throughout the value chain. This value can be unlocked through industry alignment and the implementation of the right systems, and I believe producer organisations have a key role to play in this.
“I look forward to working alongside a deeply committed team and industry stakeholders to grow SAPPO’s impact and shape a thriving future for the pork industry.” – Susan Marais, Plaas Media
