Good instincts and ‘Hot’ genetics deliver results

Cattle breeding runs deep in Stompie Olivier’s veins. For him, success comes from a combination of strict selection criteria and a God-given instinct for breeding the best animals. He relies on visual appraisal rather than numbers or papers, and only animals that catch his eye make the cut. Instinct and visual assessment are the ultimate deciding factors.

His stud bull Hotspot Mufasa (HOT 150034) is proof that his approach works. Mufasa fetched the highest price of R1 million at the Boran Cattle Breeders’ Society’s national auction in Parys in 2025. Structurally sound, well-balanced and genetically exceptional, Mufasa is a proven asset to any herd. His female offspring have also fetched premium prices at national and production auctions.

A clear vision

Stompie grew up on the family farm near Hobhouse, where his father, Hannes, managed a mixed farming enterprise and a Holstein stud herd. His grandfather, MC, encouraged him to master mathematics so that he would never be misled at auctions. To instil responsibility and breeding principles from an early age, each grandson received a heifer at age two. The heifer had to calve annually, while bull calves were exchanged for heifer calves.

Stompie was 11 when he registered Hotspot Holsteins in 1997. SA Stud Book and the bank made special allowances to support his ambitions. He sold his beef cattle and purchased two Holstein heifers, one of which set a breed record of R27 000. After completing school, he joined his father and steadily expanded his stud and beef cattle operations.

He acquired 14 Boran embryos from Simon Hodgson via Embryo Plus in 2006. Implanted into recipient heifers, they produced seven heifer calves (five full sisters) and two bull calves, exceeding the average conception rate of 50%. Three of the full sisters were later sold, and Hotspot Borans was officially registered.

His decision to focus on Borans came after discussions with Theo Nel, a Holstein breeder from Excelsior. The Boran society members’ dedication and focus on genetic excellence convinced Stompie to become involved. 

Years of showing animals further ignited his passion for top genetics, and he used embryo transfers and artificial insemination (AI) from the start. Initially, he relied on local semen; later, he invested in imported embryos despite their being expensive. It was only in 2011 that he purchased his first Boran bull to naturally breed cows that failed to conceive.

The move to North West

Stompie met his wife, Elri, at a national Boran auction in Parys in 2013. Her father, Ockert Werner, is a vegetable and cattle producer from Brits and owner of Model Borans. Ockert established strong genetics in his stud and made headlines when he purchased the most expensive bull at the time, Mr Million (Z 06-51), for R1 million. His stud animals were kept at Oatlands near Ventersdorp.

Stompie and Elri married in 2014 and relocated to Oatlands the following year, where he managed the farm for his father-in-law. The land on which Hotspot Cattle now operates forms part of the original farm. He moved his core herd of around 50 Boran stud animals to North West, while his commercial herd and embryo recipients remained in Hobhouse.

Model Borans and Hotspot Borans were initially managed separately, but in 2019 Stompie took over Model Borans and began registering calves under the Hotspot name.

A structured breeding programme

Stompie’s objective is to breed fertile, functional, structurally correct and efficient Boran cattle that add value to the local beef cattle industry. In his view, functional herds lead to greater meat production and more affordable beef.

Female fertility is the point of departure; every cow must conceive and successfully rear a calf every year. She must also display excellent conformation and femininity to remain marketable. Animals that fail to meet these standards are culled.

Animals with minor structural defects, such as crooked legs or mouths, are used in the commercial herd as embryo recipients. Only the top 2% of females are selected for embryo production, which are then implanted in recipients. Superior bulls are bred from these top cows.

All stud cows are synchronised annually, and AI’d using semen from either his top-performing bulls or purchased genetics. Older proven bulls are deliberately reintroduced to reinforce desirable traits. In summer, the in-calf cows graze natural veld and utilise crop residues in winter. During calving season, they are kept near the house to protect them from jackals and given eragrostis hay as complementary feed at night.

Strict bull selection

Selection standards for bull calves are even more rigorous. Not only should a bull add value, but it should also embody masculinity and structural soundness: ample capacity, strong legs, a broad mouth, and a long, thick tail. “A bull must look masculine and move well. It must have an ‘engine room’ to convert feed efficiently and support growth. The animal should have more body than leg and be well adapted to extensive conditions,” notes Stompie.

He favours cattle of which the top two-thirds comprise body and the bottom third leg, with minimal space beneath the belly. Short, heavy animals are best suited to his environment and management style.

Calves are weaned at around seven months of age. Previously, bull calves were backgrounded on veld until 18 or 19 months before being marketed at an average weight of 500kg. However, due to grazing limitations, young bulls now enter a semi-intensive Phase D growth test after weaning, followed by classification and selection.

Cull bulls are sent to the feedlot and slaughtered at live weights of 450 to 470kg. Selected young bulls remain on veld until they are two-and-a-half years old, at which point another rigorous selection process starts. Well-adapted bulls are marketed, while culls are slaughtered.

Line breeding as a strategy

Stompie has practised line breeding since his dairy farming days. In the beginning he applied strict culling but soon realised that excessive selectivity limited his options. He now follows a more balanced approach, with emphasis on line breeding, particularly through the five full sisters produced via embryo implantation.

One of the most influential animals in his breeding programme was the cow Zelma, which produced exceptional bulls. Many of her sons were used in his father-in-law’s herd to establish desired traits. Today, the Zelma bloodline is deeply embedded in the Hotspot herd, with many animals carrying her genetics in their pedigrees for one to three generations.

Stompie uses line breeding to ensure uniformity and heritability in the animals he markets. He believes good bloodlines guarantee sustainable genetic advancement.

Top bulls at affordable prices

The cattle industry is facing a period of uncertainty, with foot-and-mouth disease and lower maize prices making future bull prices difficult to predict. Market pressures are also expected to intensify over the next two years. In structured breeding programmes such as Hotspot’s, only a very small proportion of 2 to 3% of bull calves qualify as stud bulls. Yet Stompie believes exceptional stud bulls always prove their worth.

“One can debate about what makes a good investment. Fact is, you shouldn’t be unrealistic.” He expects the top 2% of stud bulls to continue commanding high prices, though commercial breeders may feel financial strain that could drive overall bull prices lower. This may benefit the industry as bulls that were once beyond the reach of many commercial breeders could become more affordable this year.

The true impact of a bull, he says, is measured over time. He therefore focusses on long-term genetic improvement rather than short-term profit. Broader access to superior genetics can make a lasting, sustainable contribution to the Boran breed and the beef cattle industry. – Christal-Lize Muller, Stockfarm
