AFMA Matrix April 2026 now available

In the April 2026 edition of AFMA Matrix, the spotlight falls on the newly amended Farm Feed Regulations, the first major revision in nearly two decades, unpacking key changes. We also take a look at growing career opportunities in the animal feed industry, with insights into in-demand roles and the qualifications needed to succeed, and take a closer look at the competitiveness of South Africa’s broiler industry. In addition, this issue addresses common questions around the use of animal-derived proteins in feed.

The amended Farm Feed Regulations

The footprint of every litre of milk, tray of eggs, and kilogram of meat produced in South Africa is made long before it reaches the farm gate or supermarket shelf. It starts with one essential input: animal feed. In January this year, the Farm Feed Regulations were amended and published for public comment, representing the first major revision in nearly two decades. Read more about what has changed – from registrations and feed classes to labelling and advertising – in AFMA Matrix April.

Now hiring! The animal feed industry

There is no shortage of jobs in the animal feed industry, especially for skilled and experienced workers, with the number of job postings from AFMA member companies that has risen sharply since 2023. “Feed manufacturing companies tend to remain relatively stable employers with ongoing talent needs,” says Marianne van der Laarse of Agrijob. Susan Marias of Plaas Media spoke to Marianne about which jobs are in demand and what qualifications job seekers need for a lucrative career in the animal feed sector.

Poultry and protein

The Bureau for Food and Agricultural Policy (BFAP) recently released its report, commissioned by the South African Poultry Association, on the competitiveness of the South African broiler industry, including feedback on the Poultry Industry Masterplan. Read about the findings in the April issue of AFMA Matrix.

Feeding animal-derived protein

A query that AFMA often receives is whether bloodmeal and other animal-derived protein can be used in animal feed. In AFMA Matrix April we set the record straight by outlining the science and practical implications of meeting regulatory requirements when using processed animal proteins in animal feed.
