New book to guide avocado producers

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

As avocado production expands rapidly across sub-Saharan Africa, growers face increasing pressure to adopt sustainable, science-based practices – particularly when it comes to soil health and nutrition.

In response, three agricultural specialists have collaborated on a new book, Managing soil health and nutrition for avocados, aimed at addressing key challenges in avocado cultivation. The guide, which draws on both international research and local field experience, covers a range of topics including site selection, orchard establishment, soil biology, fertilisation strategies, and nutrient timing aligned with tree phenology. It also offers practical advice on mulching, compost use, and correct sampling techniques.

Dr Neil Miles, a consulting soil scientist and co-author, says the avocado industry is still relatively young compared to crops like citrus and grapes, and that growers often encounter conflicting information, especially around soil management. “We wanted to provide a balanced, research-informed resource that growers can trust,” he explains.
