A steady hand wanted: Safa seeks to fill its general manager position

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

SA Feedlot Association (Safa), the representative body for the South African feedlot industry, is seeking a steady hand to steer its herd. Based in Pretoria, Safa is searching for a driven individual with skills in leadership, organisation, negotiation, and strategic thinking to serve as general manager. The successful candidate will effectively represent and serve the association and the feedlot industry, reporting directly to the association’s executive committee.

Safa not only provides industry representation but is involved in matters ranging from policy advocacy, legal matters and market access to meat quality, training, promotion and animal welfare. The association is also a service provider to the red meat industry. Their general manager would assist in all of the above-mentioned matters and more.

More about Safa

Safa plays a central role in supporting the country’s beef industry, which continues to face challenges such as disease outbreaks, erratic weather, and tight profit margins.

The association is a committed educator in the agricultural sector, dedicated to improving meat quality, feedlot management, food safety and welfare by providing training, support and information to its various role-players. Safa regularly hosts events, workshops, and conferences to achieve these goals. It also engages in relevant research initiatives and innovations that aim to strengthen the industry.

Safa is involved with the distribution and administration of Q-Sure GMP Systems and provides Q-Sure accreditation for good management practices.

Key requirements

Safa is seeking a strong communicator and resilient leader, equipped with computer skills (Outlook and Excel), capable of working independently, and meeting the relevant requirements outlined below.

The ideal candidate must be a South African citizen and should have the following background and qualifications:

  • Ten years of relevant experience.
  • A degree from a recognised university, preferably a veterinary degree.
  • Proven management experience.

Tasks and duties associated with the position

  • Manage Safa’s administration.
  • Represent Safa, and in some cases, the red meat industry on certain domestic structures.
  • Manage all matters pertaining to legislation, compliance and legal matters.
  • Update the legal compliance manual.
  • Manage budgets and financial planning.
  • Negotiate with government bodies on behalf of Safa members.
  • Maintain relationships and communicate with industry stakeholders and role-players.
  • Build and maintain relationships with members and potential members of Safa, including recruitment.
  • Host certain events such as the annual general meeting and Cattleman’s Conference.
  • Take proactive steps to promote the industry’s image.
  • Demonstrate leadership aligned with Safa’s vision and mission.

If you’re ready to drive the future of South Africa’s feedlot and red meat sector, Safa offers you an unparalleled opportunity. Join them in shaping, protecting, and improving an industry that feeds the nation! – Milla Matthee, Plaas Media
