For the third consecutive year, OVK hosted three separate competitions during the Karoo Winter Wool Festival in which fibre producers, the public, and school learners could participate.

OVK’s general manager: Wool & Mohair, Jacques le Roux and his wife, Linda, welcomed the guests at this special red-carpet event.

The winners of the respective competitions were announced during a glamorous gala event in Middelburg, Eastern Cape at Rusoord Venue & Farmstay on the opening day of the festival.

According to Jacques le Roux, OVK general manager: Wool and Mohair, the standard of entries this year was exceptionally high. “Firstly, I must congratulate all the winners, and thank each and every entrant for their efforts. There was just a few points’ difference between the first and tenth place in the Single Bale Wool competition. The Wool Innovation competition kept the judges busy all day with selecting the winners from a record number of entries. It is extremely important for OVK to be involved in the rural areas and with these types of festivals, serving our clients in this way.”

And the winners are …

Ian le Roux from Le Roux Trust, Fonteinskloof received R25 000 as the winner of the 2025 OVK Best Single Wool Bale competition.
The winner of the 2025 OVK Wool Innovation competition was Carlize van Zyl (for the second year in a row), who received prize money of R20 000 for her creation.

The Santam OVK Wool Art competition for school learners was sponsored by Santam. The gala evening culminated in the announcement of the winners, who were selected by guests voting for their favourite art pieces. There was also an opportunity to purchase some of the entries during the gala auction, which was conducted by Danie Strauss from Central Saleyard. The auction proceeds will be donated to the OVK Disaster Fund.

“We are grateful for their support in helping to grow this competition even further in future,” said Le Roux.

This year’s Santam OVK Wool Art Competition winner was Hansen Viljoen, a Grade 11 learner from Karoo Tuisskool in Middelburg, whose beautiful painting was auctioned for R13 000. – Carin Venter, Plaas Media
