One of the highlights at this year’s National Wool Growers’ Association (NWGA)’s annual general meeting on 4 June this year, was the presentation of several awards in recognition of exceptional results achieved by members of the NWGA. The function was held at the Kelway Hotel in Gqeberha.
Glynnis Gillwald, manager of the South African Wool & Mohair Buyers Association (Sawamba), handed over this year’s award for the Highest seasonal woolprice received on auction to André Christie-Smith from Kleiheuwel Trust, Bredasdorp for his 14.3-micron RWS-accredited Skinner Merino bale which was sold by BKB to Standard Wool for R300/kg.The Best economically classed clip award for sheared wool that meets the NWGA class standards and management practices, was sponsored by Hollard and this year it was awarded to PG Viljoen from Joens Trust, Caledon. The wool classer was Nkosizile Gungutwa. Viljoen was not able to attend the meeting and Niel du Preez, NWGA vice-chairperson received the award on his behalf. From the left are Charl Swarts, Eastern Cape regional general manager at Hollard Insurance, and Niel du Preez.Communal shearing sheds are considered an important part of the South African wool industry and outstanding results are recognised by the Zoetis Shearing Shed Awards. This year’s overall winner was Tentergate Shed for an outstanding achievement in developing their sheep project for an increased income from wool.
