In 2021 Plaas Media was once more the proud name sponsor of the Veeplaas/Stockfarm South African Society for Animal Science (SASAS) student quiz presented at the annual SASAS congresses. The 2021 competition was hosted in collaboration the SASAS Northern Branch. Last year saw 13 teams entered from various universities including the University of the Free State, Fort Hare, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, North West (Mahikeng campus), Pretoria, and Venda. Free State came out on top with Tuks in second and third place.
So, who will take the crown this year?
The 2022 quiz
This year’s instalment of the quiz will be treated as a hybrid event in collaboration with the University of Zululand. The preliminary round will be held online on 2 September from 14:00 to 16:00 and the final round will take place in-person at the congress on 26 September. The congress will be held in Pietermaritzburg at the Ascot Conference Centre.

The quiz will cover themes including nutrition, physiology, breeding and genetics, pasture science, climate change and animal science, animal health and welfare, pigs and poultry, dairy, beef and meat science, small stock and wool science, and aquaculture. The quiz will follow the same structure as previous years where the final round will be a quick-fire round.
The quizmaster and judges will be announced closer to the time, so make sure to keep an eye on our Facebook pages.
A new addition to the quiz
To add to the fun and excitement of the quiz it was decided by organisers of the quiz and congress, to add a debate! Universities can now enter teams into the debate as well and have a choice to enter either the debate or quiz, or both!
Depending on the number of entries that is received for the debate, teams will randomly be allocated to sub-groups, where two teams will debate a topic. One team will argue the pro-side, and the other will do con. Each of the three team members will be given three minutes to argue their case and another three minutes will be granted to the team leader to summarise their argument. Topics will be provided beforehand so that teams can prepare.
The preliminary round will take place online on 1 September from 14:00-16:00, a semi-final on 2 September and the final will take place at the congress in person on 26 September from 16:00-17:00.
