A short and sweet pig auction was one of the highlights on day 2 of ALFA 2017. Superior breeding material was offered on auction by Alzu Pig Genetics/PIC.

PIC Africa franchise is owned by Alzu Pig genetics, a division of Alzu Enterprises. Pig Improvement Company (PIC) is the international leader in the provision of continuous genetic improvement in swine breeding stock and in world class technical support to the global pork supply chain.

Speaking before the auction, Marguerite de Villiers of Alzu Pig Genetics/PIC emphasised that PIC combines quantitative analytics with leading-edge biotechnology to develop breeding stock to ensure maximum profitability. Two boar and sow parcels of this top breeding stock were offered on Auction at ALFA 2017

The animals on sale were PIC 337 boar and PIC410 boar, both around 6 months old and weighing about 120kg. Each of the boars was combined in a parcel with an approximately 24 weeks old Camborough gilt of around 100kg. Lot 1 was bought by Estvan de Klerk of the Green Acres stud in Upington and Lot 2 by Gerhard Munro who farms near Parys.

Both parcels came under the hammer at R11 000 each. The auction was hosted by Gavin Matthew, the 2017 winner of the Toyota SA National Young Auctioneers competition. – Marike Brits, AgriOrbit
