The Standard Bank/SA Stud Book Elite 2021 awards had to take place in a uniquely different way, as in 2020. The cancellation of Bloem Show 2021 and the restrictions that still apply, resulted in SA Stud Book and the event sponsors having to use technology to perform this year’s prize giving ceremony. Besides the awards for top breeding animals and herds, SA Stud Book also recognised developing breeders and mentors in the industry.

Developing Breeder of the Year

The winner for 2021 is Boran breeder Zamile Denga.

SA Stud Book prides itself on recognising the integration of developing farmers in the South African stud industry. Our members, the breeders’ societies, are encouraged to assist new entrants and developing breeders. In 2012 Stud Book joined hands with Unistel Laboratory, which provides important genetic services, to assist a developing stud breeder to expand his or her herd by purchasing top stud animals. The Unistel SA Stud Book Developing Breeder of the Year is selected from nominations from the Stud Book breeders’ societies. The winner for 2021 is Boran breeder Zamile Denga.

You can read more about him onpage 19 of the 2021 Stud Breeder.

Mentor Breeders of the Year

Moalosi Duncan Serapelwane

Recognition is also given to stud breeders or a group of stud breeders involved in mentoring new entrants and developing stud breeders. In this case, SA Stud Book encourages its members to become involved and ensure that the stud industry can continue sustainably through sound mentorship.

Christopher Melamu

Breeders’ societies nominate candidates for the Farmer’s Weekly SA Stud Book Elite Mentor Breeder, and the award is made following a thorough evaluation. This year the mentor breeder award went to two Bonsmara breeders who were recognised as developing breeders some years ago, and are now fulfilling an important mentoring role. The Farmer’s Weekly SA Stud Book Mentor Breeders of the Year are Christopher Melamu and Moalosi Duncan Serapelwane.

Unique Achiever of the Year

Yusuf Ravat of the Yari Hugenoot Stud

The RDB Consulting/SA Stud Book Unique Achiever of the Year award was made for the first time this year. This award recognises a breeder or owner for a unique achievement that significantly impacted his or her breed or stud breeding in general. The challenge is left to the SA Stud Book technical advisors to submit the nominations and motivations. This year’s RDB Consulting/SA Stud Book Unique Achiever of the Year award goes to Yusuf Ravat of the Yari Hugenoot Stud.
