Onderstepoort Biological Products (OBP) has launched a Rift Valley fever (RVF) vaccination awareness campaign. RVF is an acute, fever-causing viral disease that affects livestock such as cattle, buffalo, sheep and goats, and even humans.
RVF is most commonly associated with mosquito-borne epidemics, especially during high rainfall seasons. It can spread to people through contact with infected livestock, handling undercooked meat, blood or raw milk.
In livestock it causes fever, weakness, appetite loss, death in young animals and abortion in up to 100% of herds. There is no specific treatment for the disease.
OBP wishes to inform farmers and vets that they have sufficient stock of RVF vaccines and wants to encourage vaccinating. If farmers or veterinarians struggle to obtain the vaccine, they can contact the organisation directly.
OBP can be contacted via email at email@example.com or phone on 012 522 1518 or 082 574 1115. – Press release
