Mertech Cable & Wire markets and sells steel cable and wire products that are salvaged from the abovementioned undersea telecommunication cables.

Steel cables that are currently available vary in diameter, namely 6 and 7mm. Results of tests done on the cables, show a breaking force on the 6 and 7mm cables of 52kN (5,2 metric ton) and 79kN (7,9 metric ton) respectively.

Two new cables which will be available soon are presently in the development stage, using respectively 3 x 1,2mm and 4 x 1,2mm wire strands.
Fencing and trellising
Steel wires, which are ideal for fencing and trellising vegetables, citrus, vineyards and fruit orchards, vary in diameter: 0,75; 1,0; 1,2; 1,3; 1,4; 1,6; 1,8; 1,9 and 2,64mm. Another new development is the annealing of the wires mentioned above to create binding wire.
Thicker wires are also available in the following sizes: 3,4; 4,9; 5,1 and 6,96mm. These wires are galvanised and applied as offset brackets in electric fences to keep jackal away from a farmer’s sheep. Among other uses, these thicker wires can be incorporated into anchors used at the ends of trellised rows in vegetable fields, vineyards, citrus and fruit orchards.
