A new blushed pear cultivar, Celina, which will be a season-opener in South Africa, is expected next month (January). Andries van der Westhuizen, Stargrow marketing manager, says they are very excited about this harvest, as their original plan was to harvest in January 2017 but got deterred by the drought in the Western Cape.

The first commercial harvest will be used to introduce the pear – called a “rising star” in the bi-coloured pear category – to South African consumers. Stargrow, which owns the exclusive rights to the pear in South Africa, is particularly excited about its shelf life, which is 5 months under normal circumstances. Currently the pear is being commercially grown in Belgium, Spain, Switzerland, Slovakia and South Africa. –Fresh Plaza
