Kiara Nirghin, a 16-year-old girl from Johannesburg, has designed a project aimed at combating drought in South Africa. Her project combats the effects of drought on crops by retaining soil moisture, whilst still recycling waste products of the juice manufacturing industry. Kiara won a $50 000 scholarship in 2016 at the Google Science Fair, for her invention and is quoted as saying that she hopes to apply her solution on fields in South Africa to help farmers save money and also to save their crops.
