The importance of biosecurity on pig farms

What is Biosecurity?

According to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), biosecurity refers to a set of management and physical measures designed to reduce the risk of introducing, establishing, and spreading animal diseases, infections, or infestations within an animal population.

In pig farming, biosecurity is crucial for protecting domestic pigs from diseases, pests, and other health risks. By preventing the introduction and spread of infectious agents, farmers can safeguard herd health and maintain farm productivity.

Key elements of biosecurity

  1. Animal introduction: Ensuring animals introduced to a herd are free of diseases of concern.
  2. Controlled access: Limiting farm access and enforcing strict protocols for employees and visitors to prevent the introduction of diseases.
  3. Isolation: Keeping new or sick animals separate from healthy ones to prevent the spread of potential pathogens.
  4. Hygiene: Regularly cleaning and disinfecting equipment, facilities, and hands to minimise pathogen transmission.
  5. Vaccination: Immunising animals against common threats to prevent disease outbreaks.
  6. Monitoring: Conducting regular health checks to detect and address potential issues early.

Effective biosecurity is crucial for animal welfare, minimising economic losses, and ensuring food safety. It’s a proactive approach that benefits both farmers and consumers.

Traceability in livestock farming, refers to the tracking and documentation of the history, movement, and origin of animals and their products throughout the entire supply chain. It ensures accountability, food safety, and quality control while aiding disease management.

A farm’s biosecurity measures are only as strong as its traceability system. Tracking animal movements is essential to proving their origin and transportation method, ensuring transparency and accountability.

SAPPO’s role in biosecurity monitoring

The South African Pork Producers’ Organisation (SAPPO) operates an online platform called ‘World of Pork’, a central hub for tracking pig movements, veterinary visits, biosecurity assessments, and farm audits.

Certain features of the World of Pork platform, are accessible via a mobile app, enabling veterinarians and other qualified professionals to conduct convenient biosecurity assessments. The app’s questionnaire is based on industry regulations and designed for ease of use, developed in consultation with industry experts.

While these features are optional, pig farms certified under the Pork 360 programme, undergo audits to assess their implementation.

How Pork 360 strengthens farm biosecurity

The Pork 360 farm standards focus on:

  • Biosecurity.
  • Environmental stewardship.
  • Antimicrobial stewardship.
  • Animal health and welfare.
  • Food safety.

Pork 360 helps farmers effectively manage herd risks, supporting long-term business success. Certified farms undergo annual audits, ensuring their biosecurity measures are documented and tracked on the World of Pork platform.

Biosecurity and disease outbreaks

When authorities impose sudden bans on pig movements during a disease outbreak, having pre-established biosecurity standards can significantly assist decision-makers in assigning risk ratings to facilities. While this does not guarantee exemptions from movement restrictions, it can expedite risk assessments and potentially shorten restriction durations.

Taking action: Strengthening biosecurity on your farm

Implementing a strong biosecurity plan is vital for every pig farmer. Here’s what you can do today:

  • Review and update your farm’s biosecurity protocols.
  • Ensure accurate traceability records for all animal movements.
  • Utilise SAPPO’s World of Pork platform for efficient tracking and assessments.
  • Consider joining the Pork 360 programme for structured biosecurity compliance.

By prioritising biosecurity, farmers can protect their herds, maintain industry standards, and contribute to a resilient and sustainable pork sector.
