The Animal Feed Manufacturers Association (AFMA) hosted its second annual media and industry day in Pretoria on 28 May, where it announced plans to modernise its code of conduct into a risk-based, technology-driven assurance system. The growing integration of feed and food systems was the central theme of the event, and several speakers delved into the performance of animal feed in a changing regulatory and supply and demand environment. Future of the feed ingredient trade
The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) has the potential to be among the largest free trade areas in the world once fully implemented, connecting 1,3 billion people across 55 countries. Dr Lucius Phaleng, trade advisor at AFMA, unpacks the effect it can have on agricultural trade. He also discusses the feed sector’s growth potential, especially in terms of poultry and pigs, and touches on the challenges faced, such as infrastructure and logistics.
The global feed outlook
In the July 2026 issue of AFMA Matrix, Petru Fourie, operations manager of AFMA, provides handy summaries of the 2026 Alltech Agri-Food Outlook for the ruminant and monogastric sectors. While poultry and pig production continued to drive much of the global feed industry’s growth during 2025, the Agri-Food Outlook shows that ruminant production systems are operating in a pressured environment.
Spotlight on SA’s rendering sector
Rendering facilities play a critical but often overlooked role in South Africa’s livestock industry. These facilities convert animal by-products into regulated, usable materials that are processed into products such as protein meals and oils. Jimmy Bekker, chairperson of RSA Renderers, explains why rendering is important and the role of oversight and traceability in ensuring quality products for the feed sector.
