Science, passion, excellence, Dohne! This is the theme that will be guiding the 2026 Dohne Merino World Congress to be held from 18 to 24 October next year. This is a major event for South Africa and the Dohne Merino Breeders’ Society which will be celebrating its 60th birthday in 2026. The congress is a historical one, not only for the society, but for all its members, commercial producers, and role-players who contributed to the progress made with this excellent breed.
Boasting more than 87 years of progress, the Dohne Merino is certainly leading the pack offering its breeders and commercial producers the best of two worlds – excellent meat and excellent wool. Dual-purpose without equal. Add to that traits such as adaptability, high fertility, and excellent growth, and it becomes clear why this is one of the fastest-growing breeds in the world and a true South African success story.

The world congress programme will honour these exceptional characteristics of the Dohne as well as its producers and other role-players who continue this proud tradition of scientific, passionate breeding.
We look forward to welcoming our international Dohne counterparts who will be travelling to our shores to celebrate this milestone with us.
The congress will kick off with a hearty South African welcome for overseas visitors, along with farm visits to leading Dohne producers in the Moorreesburg vicinity. Thereafter, the delegation will travel to our home for the duration of the congress, the Arabella Hotel near Hermanus in the Southern Cape.

The first day of the conference will entail a variety of presentations by experts in their field – from geneticists and animal health practitioners to breeders and management specialists. Network opportunities and technical discussions along with a general meeting of all the international Dohne Merino societies present will round off the programme. And of course there will be good food. After all, what is true South African experience without a proper braai!
The second day of the congress is a continuance of the congress programme, followed by a gala event during which the society and breed’s exceptional performance over almost nine decades will be celebrated.
An extended programme is offered from 22 to 25 October, allowing our overseas guests and other interested parties to join us in a tour of Dohne farms in the Overberg vicinity as well as the agricultural landscape of Bredasdorp and Cape Agulhas, as well as a true tourist experience in Hermanus and Cape Town.
