This year’s Southern African Wildlife Management Association (Sawma) conference takes place from 31 August to 5 September at Mpekweni Beach Resort in the Eastern Cape.
A highlight of the conference is the student quiz, sponsored by Plaas Media. The student quiz that took place on Tuesday night, 2 September, was characterised by friendly and fierce rivalry among the seven student teams that entered this year’s quiz.

As Sawma’s president, Jeanetta Selier said the quiz is all about team spirit and having fun when the students and professors compete against each other. “The quiz was initiated a few years ago and is seen as an integral part of the annual congress,” she said. “It consists of 25 science-related questions, during which the student teams must select the right answer from a presented listed of choices. Only three teams can go through to the next round, with another set of questions for them and the professors. The questions usually revolve around the wildlife industry, conference presentations, and posters which have been presented by the students. – Carin Venter, Plaas Media
